This memorial is located in Nilonkangas on the grounds of the Kuusamo border guard post. According to the text on the plaque, 747 Soviet troops are buried in the area.
The mass grave was established soon after the end of the Continuation War and the Lapland War. Soviet citizens that died in the Kuusamo area during the war are buried there. The grave also has fallen Soviet citizens from Suomussalmi that died during the Winter War and presumably prisoners who died in the German trench railway construction site in Taivalkoski.
The burial was overseen by a group led by a Soviet colonel. It was a part of a supervisory commission that was in Finland in the 1940's. The actual job was done by the police and the border guard.
The memorial has a plaque with a russian text:
”Здесь погребено 747 советских военно служащих.”
Translation
