This bronze sculpture on a granite pedestal was erected in honour of the rebuilding of Kuusamo. It is located on the the front of the town hall. The memorial is designed by professor Terho Sakki, an it was unveiled during the national local heritage days in the summer of 1986.
In the autumn of 1944 the withdrawing german troops destroyed most of Kuusamo as they were leaving. The inhabitants of Kuusamo returning from the evacuation found the destroyed villages. The town of Kuusamo was completely in ruins. In total 2 286 buildings were destroyed, of which 621 were residential buildings and 526 were buildings for livestock. The percentage of destruction was 65. A large amount of domestic animals were also destroyed. Approximately 200 properties were left in the ceded region.
After the return from the evacuation a busy rebuilding began. It is telling of the great pace of the rebuilding, that in 1945 1 811 buildings were already completed and 1 279 buildings were under construction. There was a lack of every tool, but in a few years the destroyed Kuusamo was rebuilt. The people living in the korsu and temporary housings got themselves new homes.

The Kuusamo municipality has a total of twenty four statues and monuments. Most of them are about war history, but there are also some that are about significant people and events.
A Monument can be a decorated stone, a wooden, stony or metallic structure, or a simple mark like a metal plate or a carving on a rock.
