This memorial is located by the Torangintaival road on the isthmus between the lakes Toranki and Kuusamojärvi. A cross and a metal plate have been attached to the rock that was erected on the ruins of the first church of Kuusamo.
The Kemi Lapland parish was founded in 1673, whose head was soon decided to be in Kuusamo. The parish included the whole northern Finland, from Kuusamo to Inari. The first vicar of the parish to be appointed was Gabriel Tuderus, son of a priest from Kemi. The first sermon hut was built by the Torangintaival road in 1689. A rectory was also built nearby. After the completion of the sermon hut the parish was dubbed Kuusamo Lapland parish. The first official church was built a couple of years later to its current location and the use of the sermon hut by Torangintaival ended.
