Cuckoo Chick's Foster Parent

Kuusamon kaupunki

There are many birds in nature, who use the burrows made by Great spotted woodpecker. Common redstart is the most common of these species. Common redstart typically lives on yards, however it is more often heard than seen.

In the Finnish name of the Common redstart, "Leppälintu", the word leppä is a synonym for the word blood.

Common redstart might settle in a wall crack or in a hole in a woodpile, but it prefers a birdhouse with a comparatively large hole, even though it is a small bird. A mother Cuckoo can easily put her eggs in a birdhouse like that, and so the Common redstart is the most famous foster parent to Cuckoo chicks.

Common redstart migrates from northern Africa to Finland to nest in may.
