The best characteristic of the Song thrush is it's beautiful singing, that has certainly stuck in the mindscape of many a Finn.
In April and May the "flute" of the Song thrush can be heard during the dimming spring nights. The Song thrush is usually difficult to see. Song thrush sings in a slow and speech-like tone. In Finnish it is also called "puhujarastas" (Speaker thrush). Short, rhythmic motifs repeat a few times.
It does not thrive in yards or gardens, but prefers to live in the wilderness. The nest of the Song thrush is often on a small spruce or juniper, and there it will lay 4-6 eggs in June, then incubates them a few weeks and the chicks stay in the nest for another few weeks.
Song thrush is a nocturnal migrant and it winters in western- and south-western Europe, where it will migrate in September-October.
Munakka Forest Trail showcases the local nature on a lit trail, which can be used for brisk exercise during summer and for skiing during the winter.
