Forests are restocked either naturally or artificially.
Forests can be restocked once the average age of the trees is approximately 80 years and the thickness is 20 centimetres from chest height.
Natural restocking is used on dry forests and more barren forest types, as long as the seed trees are good quality. The ground is modified and the bush is removed as a preparatory procedure.
To prevent the excess growing of saplings, restocking must be avoided on areas with an abundance of birch trees. Removal of the seed trees is the most successful in the winter, when snow protects the saplings.
In regeneration cutting trees are cut on 25-50 metre long strips, where the trees on the edges of the strips seed and restock the area naturally.
In Kuusamo, 2000 hectares of forest are restocked every year.
Munakka Forest Trail showcases the local nature on a lit trail, which can be used for brisk exercise during summer and for skiing during the winter.
