The Pikisaari Island is an old industrial district, which has housed operations from shipbuilding to pitch works and buildings from storehouses to big factories. The purpose of the old wool mill and the other buildings has changed over time. Nowadays they are residences and studios for local artists.
You can also find small, unique accommodation in this idyllic wooden district. Take a charming two-kilometre recreation trail along the shores of the island, and find little sheltered spots for swimming or fishing on the way. Along the trail, at the end of the Polttimokatu street, you can find one of the rocks that flew all the way to Pikisaari when the gun powder cellar of Oulu Castle blew up in 1793.
On the corner of Pikisaarentie street and Pursitie street you will find the oldest wooden building in Oulu, Matila House, which accommodates the Sailor’s Home Museum in the summer time.
