Plaanaoja brook or the City Brook is an old slough of the Oulu River, winding its way through the city centre and forming a lush park zone along its route. Created after the most devastating fire in Oulu in 1822, the purpose of this zone was to work as a protective barrier and prevent fires from spreading within the town. The plan was drawn by Ehrenström and Engel in 1825. The current brook lighting, glowing in orange and red, is a reminder of the history of the wooden town.
