Designed by Marjatta and Matti Jaatinen, Oulu Theatre (1974) and Oulu City Library (1982) are located on Vänmanni island next to the bridge to Pikisaari island. There is a funny local saying according to which the theatre in Oulu was built in the sea, the university in a marsh, and the deep-water harbour on dry land. The city side of the library consist of a huge glass wall offering a great view of the Market Square and the centre.
