Vaaranpuisto

Oulun kaupunki

At the beginning of the 19th century, the district of Vaara was an outlying town inhabited by sailors and had the reputation of being a part of the poor. There were a lot of children in the families and because of this the area was called Kakaravaara ("kakara" means a kid and "vaara" can be translated as hill or danger). The writer Teuvo Pakkala has described Kakaravaara in his work Vaaralla, published in 1891. The area covering three blocks was turned into a park at the beginning of the 20th century and was named Vaaranpuisto in 1947.
