This restaurant next to the Ainola Park has hosted parties, meetings and events for more than a hundred years. Rauhala’s main building (1899) was built for Clementine Åström, wife of K.R. Åström of Åström’s tannery family. The street Mannenkatu was named after Clementine’s son Emanuel. Oulu Merchants’ Guild rented Rauhala in 1937 and received a restaurant licence in 1950. This launched the restaurant period in Rauhala – one that has continued until this day with only a few short breaks in between. Rauhala (”House of Peace” in English) was designed in the spirit of neo-renaissance, and its least ”peaceful” period took place when it served as the student house for Oulu university students’ guild – naturally also the venue for countless student parties.
Right beside Restaurant Rauhala, there is Tuba Food & Lounge, a popular culture-driven restaurant that utilises organic, regional and food waste ingredients together with Rauhala. A laid-back, retro ambience and active live music scene are essential elements of the Tuba experience.
