The Northern Ostrobothnia Museum was closed from the public at the end of 2023. A new museum building for the Oulu Museum and Science Center is being constructed in Myllytulli, which will open in 2026.
Originally on this place was the Ainola villa, which was built as a residence for the Åström family. Maria Åström, the widow of Commercial Counselor Hemming Åström, and her daughter Hanna Frankenhaeuser donated the building to the city of Oulu in 1910. The building housed the Oulu City Library and the Northern Ostrobothnia Museum starting in 1912. The villa was destroyed in a fire in 1929, after which a new museum building, designed by architect Oiva Kallio, was built on the site of the old villa. The museum operated in the new building from the 1930s until the early 2020s.
