Oulu Museum of Art is focused on contemporary art and particularly art from Oulu and Northern Ostrobothnia. The old red-brick section of the building itself represents industrial architecture from the 1920s, connected to a postmodern newer section. The building was designed by Birger Federley and used to house functions for the Brothers Åström tannery, including their main offices, canteen, club premises, glue factory and kiln. In the 1950s, the building was adopted by the University of Oulu Department of Botany. It also served as the university library until 1987. The building was expanded into an art museum in 1990.
