Kalajoki

The horse racing track was founded in Kalajoki in 1968 by the local Hevosystäväinseura (“Horse hobbyist Society”). The same society has been taking care of the track ever since.

Horse racing has a long tradition in Kalajoki – the most famous and successful horses being BWT Magic, Kihin-Muisto and Kihin Hiski, which have all belonged to the stable of Matti Salmi.

Attending horse races has formed into a popular tradition during Midsummer in Kalajoki.

Information about the route:

  • You can experience the route by walking or bicycling in part or in its entirety, or completely remotely in digital form.
  • The entire route is app. 10 km long, but you can also just tour the central area of Hiekkasärkät.
  • The route uses sidewalks, duckboards, and open spaces like squares and parking lots.

The route is made in collaboration with the KUMA project and expert on built heritage Sari Alajoki.
